Sustainability

Sustainability has been a part of Lakeside Foods since 1887. Lakeside was an innovator of Crop Rotation, Pest Management and control of chemicals, and the Minimum Till Strategy. Lakeside's internal Sustainability Team, consisting of both Lakeside Plant and Lakeside Corporate employees, has been in place for quite some time and has worked hard to establish a benchmark to measure our progress. Lakeside focuses on sustaining:

  • Clean and healthy air by using battery-operated forklifts in our plants
  • The Land and Ecosystems with the development of Lakeside's IPM program (audited annually and regularly scoring in the high 90's), and better management of our vegetable processing water
  • Generating clean energy and using it efficiently by installing:
    • energy-efficient boilers in our plants
    • windmills at two of our plants
    • air doors in our freezers to prevent cold air from escaping
    • energy-efficient lighting at our plants and offices
    • automatic light controls in our warehouses
  • Using safe materials and using them carefully by challenging our packaging suppliers; participating in the Ball Sustainability Forum; striving to always reduce, re-use, recycle; and establishing a bulk seed bag return and re-use policy
  • Ensuring the existence of available, quality water by recapturing heat from our waste water
